Volunteers Needed for Bottling

March is always a hectic month around the winery because we are getting ready to bottle at the end of the month. All of the final checks on labels and packaging and deliveries can be a little stressful.

However, when it all comes together on bottling day it is very exciting! We invite you to come out and take a peek behind the curtain of how our wine makes it into the bottle. Our mobile bottler brings his equipment on a tractor-trailer that he backs right up to our loading door. He takes our finished wine and creates a finished product with capsule and labels on at a rate of about 52 bottles a minute.

It is truly something to see.

This year we are bottling on March 26 and 27.  We give tours throughout the day of the bottling line during tasting room hours. Come on out and see it.

Or even better, come on out and help. Follow this link for volunteer sign-up. It’s an exciting way to spend a morning or afternoon. We’ll even feed you lunch. Then, you can be part of the team that works like crazy so our guests can be lazy!

Friends of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center Receives Donation from Layton’s Chance Winery & Vineyard

“Freedom” Wine Helps Support Education and Outreach

Vienna, Maryland – October 8, 2018 – Layton’s Chance Vineyard & Winery, based in Vienna, Md. brought good news in the form of an oversized check and a very real donation to the Friends of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. The check, made out for $2,115.00, represents proceeds from the sale of 423 bottles of the winery’s “Freedom” wine in the first half of 2018.

“Harriet Tubman’s legacy is defined by her commitment to freedom, faith and love of family, and we established the ‘Freedom’ wine to honor that,” said Layton’s Chance CEO Jennifer Layton. “We live and work in Dorchester County and we, and our customers, are passionately committed to this project.”

“Freedom” is a romantic and refreshing blend of Catawba and Chambourcin grapes, with a berry essence and a sweet finish, making it a favorite of visitors to the winery. Five dollars from the purchase of each bottle is donated to Friends of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center.

This is the second donation Layton’s Chance has made since introducing the wine in 2017, with the total donation exceeding $7,000 to date.

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center serves as a welcome center and history museum located on the grounds of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Church Creek, Md. Surrounded by the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, the park is jointly managed by the National Park Service and Maryland Park Service.

Friends of Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center is an independent nonprofit partner. The organization’s mission is to raise awareness and appreciation of the park while providing education and interpretive resources to enhance visitor experiences.

To purchase “Freedom” wine, visit www.laytonschance.com or call 410-228-1205.

Layton’s Chance Continues its Summer Concert Series on Saturday, July 21 with Local Favorite, Tranzfusion

Vienna, Md. – July 3, 2018 – Layton’s Chance Winery & Vineyard has announced the line up for the balance of its summer concert series.

On Saturday, July 21, local favorite Tranzfusion will bring high energy to the winery with a classic rock performance. Spontaneous dancing will likely break out.

The Beach Bumz, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, will bring his hard-to-categorize but easy to relax and dance to “island” pop/rock on Saturday, August 18. Hawaiian print shirts and grass skirts encouraged.

Each evening the winery will begin admissions at 5pm and the entertainers will take the stage at about 6pm.

Looking ahead to the fall, save Saturday, October 13 from 12pm to 7pm for the annual Layton’s Chance Harvest Festival, a day of celebration with entertainment by the Ampersand Folk Band, singer/songwriter Meredith Rounsley, and Americana/bluegrass band Wheelhouse.

Tickets are available for each event in advance at the winery or online for $7.00 each or are available at the door for $10.00. Guests under age 21, free. Food will be available for purchase by Ron’s Famous Pit Beef, but picnics including non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Layton’s Chance wines are the only alcoholic beverages that may be consumed on premises.

We made it through the rain!

These words sung by Barry Manilow keep running through my head! With record spring rains on Delmarva, the work on the farm and vineyard had been compressed into a small window of time! Everyone on the farm is working full speed ahead.  We are pleased to report that our grapes are doing well with no outward signs of damage.  We will have to wait until they ripen to know for sure. Everywhere else on the farm we are scrambling. We had corn that needed to be replanted.  (it looks a little shorter than usual at this point in the summer, but we’ll get there) Our soybeans were planted later than we wanted. While all of this is happening our wheat was ready for harvest! It’s dry enough to cut and we were relieved to discover there was no mold or disease. At one point we thought we’d need a rowboat to harvest, but things have dried out well. We have also started fertigating this month.  Fertigation is something we started last year.  It is the ability to put fertilize onto our crops through the irrigation system.  This means that instead of putting it all on early, and having the chance for it to run off or disappear into ground water, we gradually feed the crop throughout the growing season.

Layton’s Chance Brings Home Four Medals from 2018 Comptroller’s Cup

2017 BoBerry Strawberry Wins “Best of Class – Fruit” and “Gold”

Vienna, Md. – June 28, 2018 – Layton’s Chance Winery & Vineyard owners Jennifer and William Layton returned from the 2018 Maryland Comptroller’s Cup with an armful of awards for their efforts, including a coveted “Best of Class” in the “Fruit” category for their popular Layton’s Chance 2017 BoBerry Strawberry Wine.

Comptroller's Cup“Winning a Best in Class award was tremendous validation,” said Jennifer Layton, General Manager. “These are the best wines in the state, and to be one of them is quite an honor.”

Layton’s picked up three more awards at the event, which is hosted by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. The 2017 BoBerry Strawberry Wine was also honored with a Gold medal while their 2016 Farm White was awarded a Silver and 2014 Chambourcin a Bronze. Winners received their awards at a ceremony hosted by Mr. Franchot earlier this month.

The competition, held in Timonium, is judged by wine industry professionals in a blind tasting. Twenty judges spent more than six hours deliberating. As they judge, they are only aware of the composition of the wine; they are not aware of the label, price, intended market or any other details.

While this is the first Best of Class win for the winery, it received two awards at the 2017 competition: a Silver for its 2014 Norton and a Bronze for its 2013 Vidal Blanc.

The Comptroller’s Cup is organized by the Maryland Wineries Association, a non-profit, member-based trade association, which represents more than 90 wineries across the state. MWA’s mission is to cultivate a sustainable wine-growing community by expanding agricultural products and increasing awareness.  For more information and a complete list of winners, please visit www.marylandwine.com.

ATTENTION DELWARIANS

We are constantly asked in the tasting room why we cannot ship to the state of Delaware. Believe me, we would love to ship there, however, Delaware’s laws prohibit us from doing so. Although there have been bills introduced to change this, the only way they will pass is if constituents make enough noise to their legislator. So, here goes my Delawarians!

Make your voice known through the ‘Free The Grapes’ website.  You can follow this link to get a more detailed understandin

g of what is happening, as well as template emails to send to your legislator. Lately, we have been getting a lot of calls from customers saying that they cannot find our product in their local DE stores anymore.

Unfortunately, Delaware is a three-tier state, meaning there are three steps to selling alcohol: manufacturer – distributor – retailer, which means that we have to use a distributor to sell inside the state.  We have done this for years but our current distributor has gone out of business and as of yet we have not been able to obtain a new one. So once again, I ask for the power of the people. I hope that you will continue to go into your stores and ask the retailers for our product and urge them to ask their other wine distributors to carry our wine.

An easy holiday recipe to wow your guest, WITHOUT cooking!

Take it easy this holiday season with offering a wide selection nibbles for your guests without cooking!

Gather cheese, nuts, meats, figs, raisins, dates, grapes, cheese straws and crackers. Line a long counter or table with holiday greenery and place small plates or small bowls on top to hold the snacks (this makes a festive presentation). Add a few small tea lights or votives as well. This is a great time to add some local flavor, if you have local jams, nuts or cheeses that are known to your area, feature those. Pair with a few local wines or a Cranberry Orange Sparkler (see recipe below) and you are all set!!

Cranberry Orange Sparkler

Punch bowl size add equal part cranberry juice and orange juice to 1 bottle of sparkling wine or prosecco. Add frozen cranberries and orange wedges or make a ice ring with them but use one of the juices to freeze not water. Add the sparkling wine right before serving. Garnish with rosemary in each glass.

Sure, we have all heard of craft beers, but have you ever heard of craft wine?

102.5 WBOC’s Corey Phoebus recently paid a visit to Layton’s Chance Vineyard and Winery in Vienna, Md. to learn more about this special type of wine and their upcoming Christmas event.

Jennifer Layton, owner of Layton’s Chance, says craft wine is made in smaller batches. They have a craft wine called Impostor which actually tastes like beer. This type of wine is only served in the tasting room at the winery.

The Old Fashioned Christmas Market event is on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 1 pm-4 pm at Layton’s Chance Vineyard and Winery. Many vendors, carolers, food and wine will be at the event as well.
